Drug Testing in School in UK – Pros and Cons of Drug Testing Students in High Schools in UK by Lena Butler
Many have suggested Drug Screening and tests be conducted in schools for the welfare of the students and personnel. Since the time of Tony Blair, drug testing in schools have been a much-debated issue along with Drug Screening In The Workplace. The questions always go about the necessity and effectiveness of these Drug Tests.
Whilst people have so far been divided in this issue, there have been schools around the UK that have proceeded to conduct random and suspicion-less drug screening. Indeed there are obvious benefits in conducting these tests in schools but there are also necessary risks involved. Here are some of the pros and cons of conducting drug tests in schools:
- Pro: Assures students, faculty and the overall public of their safety.
This has been the bottom line reason that drug-screening supporters have been pushing to the fold. Many concerned parents and teachers, especially in high schools, have supported the notion of conducting tests especially if there are suspicious students enrolled in the said schools. Though innocent unless proven otherwise, conducting these tests may provide a strong reason for students to stay away from these illegal substances.
- Con: The argument of drug tests being an outright invasion of a student’s privacy
There are laws that protect and preserve people’s right to their privacy and many have invoked this to rebuke the advances of the drug screening advocates. Looking at this simply, conducting tests in schools gives people the notion that school authorities have already assumed guilt among its population hence the need to conduct the tests.
This violates the 1998 Human Rights Act which states that people have the right to not participate from these kinds of tests that they deem are invasive to their lives. Like workplace drug testing, students have the right to not participate in drug tests conducted by their schools.
- Pro: Over-all, it guides these young students towards the right path.
Saying “no” to drugs have always been the stance of governments and educators, not only in the UK, but also around the world. However, drug uses amongst the youth still prevail in society even if it’s just a small minority. Drug screening discourages such behavior and promotes the health and well being of these high school students.
- Con: Effectiveness and relation to decreasing drug use amongst students are undetermined
Though many drug-testing companies claim otherwise, there is really no hard evidence or studies that support it. Drug screening is a prerogative usually taken by schools and imposed on their students. The relation of tests in schools to actually decreasing the number of drug users remains unproven.
Drug tests in schools are beneficial depending on whose point of view you are looking at. But the main obstacle with regards to this issue is the fact that it remains unproven whether drug screening actually decreases the incidence of drug use amongst high school in the UK.

Anticancer Drug Discovery and Development: Natural Products and New Molecular Models $389 With the publication of these proceedings from the Second Drug Discovery and Development Symposium, this forum has become the main mechanism for bringing together the principal groups involved in both discovering and developing new approaches to the treatment of cancer. This Second Symposium emphasized the types of materials being discovered and their therapeutic activity. This is especially evident in the natural product discovery programs, where unique and active structures are being identified. The major contributors to the meeting were the investigators participating in the National Cooperative (Natural Products) Drug Discovery Groups [NC(NP)DDG]. These groups reflect an association among researchers at universities or cancer centers, pharmaceutical companies and the National Cancer Institute. Their sources of materials are varied, reflecting chemical inventories of pharmaceutical companies, organic synthetic compounds from the laboratory, cytotoxics as well as biologics and their hybrids, and natural products obtained from plants, marine organisms and microorganisms. The models employed in the discovery systems vary from broadly cellular based to specific enzymes to defined cellular functions. Each of them is believed important to the malignant state and will allow for the discovery of compounds which will have efficacy in cancer therapy. The goal of the participants is both to discover new anticancer agents and to develop them as efficiently as possible into clinically useful additions to treatment. Of importance is the fact that there are a number of promising leads which will soon be moving into the clinic thereby testing the effectiveness of this NC (NP) DDG approach. |
